ACTION ALERT
November 18, 2004
When it comes to spending other people's money, politicians are like alcoholics who try to drink themselves sober. Yesterday, the U.S. Senate approved raising the federal debt limit by a whopping $800 billion.
Tonight, the U.S. House will vote on the same measure. We strongly urge a "no" vote.
The once-hallowed phrase "full faith and credit of the U.S. government" doesn't carry the same reverence these days. Foreign countries, American and overseas corporations, and private individuals are selling their U.S. dollars. Even famed investor Warren Buffett has been betting against the dollar for the first time in his career. In addition, these same people who routinely finance our government's insatiable desire for debt aren't buying U.S. treasuries as much.
What do they know that we don't? Nothing...and that's the point. We all know that too much debt will cripple any borrower -- even the U.S. government.
It's difficult to comprehend an $8.2 trillion public debt. It's like trying to comprehend the distance between stars. But just because something is difficult to comprehend doesn't make it unreal.
Our national debt is now so enormous that Congressman Ron Paul recently warned how it has become a threat to our national security. "Debt destroys U.S. sovereignty, because the American economy now depends on the actions of foreign governments. While we brag about our role as world superpower in international affairs, we are in truth the world's greatest debtor. Like all debtors, we are not truly free," Dr. Paul stated on October 25, 2004.
You'll hear that the "war on terror" and the "support of our troops" are the main reasons for increasing the national debt. Not true. The truth today is the same as before 9/11: P-O-R-K.
It's time for the politicians in Washington to get sober. Urge your U.S. representative to vote "no" on raising the national debt limit. Go to
